need for control

a week at work has made me realise the stark realities of working in a big bureaucratic organisation. information channels are long, some longer than others. whether you get heard depends on who you're working for, and what you're working on, and not really who you are and the work you eventually produce. oh, for sure there are different qualities of work, and some produce better quality-stuff than others. but really - most people recruited are of decent if not excellent calibre...and so many end up getting lost in this huge wheel. a wheel that grinds along relentlessly and without rest, sacrificing many cogs along the way.

for what more are we than cogs in a wheel that must keep on moving? "the hallmark of a good civil servant is: if anyone drops dead tomorrow, others must be able to seamlessly take over anything and everything that was left behind."

an inescapable fact.
