kyoto was a whirl...

im back home. arrived early this morning, all bleary-eyed, at shinjuku station, only to find herds of people dressed in tracksuits and running shoes, some carrying flags and assorted banners, and all running/walking briskly towards something.

then i saw a sign that said "Tokyo Marathon." *grin* had this urge to go take a look, but in the end i decided i'd go home and take a shower and sleep instead.

anyway, kyoto (and osaka) was a whirl of activity - all thanks to a good friend who acted as a wonderful guide. some of the highlights.

清水寺(kiyomizu-dera) a temple at the edge of Kyoto that is one of UNESCO's world cultural heritage sites. regrettably i'm not there in spring or autumn, because the whole mountain side comes aflame with colour when the sakura blooms or the leaves turn red in the fall. maybe i will make a trip back. perhaps.

seeing a geisha in the 祇園 (Gion) district. a real one. apparently you can now pay money to dress up as a geisha for a day, make up and all, and get gawked at by (other) tourists.

but this is the real thing, definitely. trust me!

really good food, including okonomiyaki cooked in front of us (a japanese pancake-like mix of cabbage and meat and squid) and really really good sushi in osaka, in a small shop that can seat no more than 15 people, and where the sushi is freshly made after you order. it was really really good. and cheap, too. (should have taken a photo!)

crossing the 鴨川(kamo-gawa) river, the main river in Kyoto, on some stepping stones. the river isn't as deep as it looks. but the stones aren't as near as they look, either. was pretty fun.

oh and saw some things that reminded me distinctly of my childhood.

huge pocky cake and hello kitty.

was good to get away for a while, though i was knackered by the end of it all, and so was my friend. *grin* there was lots and lots and lots of walking. it helped me sleep all the way on the 7-hr overnight bus ride, though....

think i'll take a break for most of today. :)
